A review of the available literature has been completed and a written, documented summary is being compiled. Some additional evaluations of straw residue management under California conditions should be completed soon. The information is being compiled into a Rice Residue Management Evaluation Report which will cover the importance of rice straw; yield and chemical composition; handling; factors affecting decomposition; decomposition products; effects of straw decomposition on soil properties, crop growth, pollution hazards, etc.; economic aspects of straw utilization; and unsolved problems and future research needs.
